Activities
We hope that you use our destination wedding as an opportunity to take a longer holiday and enjoy all Scotland has to offer. Here are some suggestions, organised by region and cost, of activities and tourist destinations that we encourage you explore outside of the wedding dates.
Edinburgh
Free
The Royal Mile and Grassmarket
This is a stretch of road that runs from Edinburgh Castle at the top of the hill to Holyrood Palace at the bottom. The Grassmarket is just below the castle. Both of these areas provide a pleasant walk filled with amazing architecture, history , shops, and cafes. You are guaranteed to hear a bagpipe or two while you wander! Many other tourist destinations are close by or directly on the Royal Mile, including the National Museum of Scotland, The Scotch Whisky Experience, and St Giles Cathedral, and many tour experiences meet on the mile. Beware tourist traps, but in general, this is a fantastic area to spend a few hours.
National Museum of Scotland
https://www.nms.ac.uk/national-museum-of-scotland/This museum covers a wide range of subjects from natural history to Scottish history to scientific discoveries to travelling exhibits of international artefacts. It is in the heart of Edinburgh, easily accessible by foot or by bus, and very close to other attractions like the Royal Mile and Greyfriars Bobby. It also has a nice cafe where you can grab lunch or a snack.
Arthur’s Seat
Arthur’s Seat is an ancient dormant volcano that overlooks Edinburgh and is a must-see attraction for nature lovers and hikers. This walk can be quite demanding at times with high-percentage gradients, so make sure you pack water, and wear suitable footwear! At the bottom of Arthur’s Seat are the Holyrood Palace gardens for a still picturesque but less demanding walk.
Greyfriars Bobby/Greyfriars Kirkyard
You can find this attraction just across the road from the National Museum of Scotland. Greyfriars Bobby refers to the metal statue of a little dog in a place of prominence just in front of Greyfriars Kirkyard (graveyard). The statue commemorates its namesake, who was the loyal guardian of its owner’s grave for fourteen years in the late 1800s. The kirkyard itself is also a gorgeous place to wander and includes the grave of extremely untalented poet, William McGongall!
Under £30 - Advanced Booking Required or Highly Recommended
Edinburgh Castle
https://www.edinburghcastle.scot/plan-your-visit/ticketsContaining the castle itself, cafes, and a war museum, this is a must-see if you are interested in the rich and often bloody history of Scotland. Depending on the time of day you visit, you may also be able to see/hear a cannon fire! Most tickets are in the £20 -£25 range, but family tickets are over £30.
Mercat Historic and Ghost Tours
https://www.mercattours.com/There are many offerings for guided tours above and below ground in the Edinburgh Vaults, but this company Maddie has used before and enjoyed. Whether you are interested in a straight-forward telling of the history of some of Edinburgh’s streets or a spooky Ghost Tour in the Vaults (just like Ghost Adventures!) Mercat Tours will almost certainly have something to interest you.
Scott Monument
https://www.edinburghmuseums.org.uk/venue/scott-monumentIt’s almost certain that this is the first thing you will notice when you look out over the city from the castle! This gorgeous Gothic structure is a monument to the beloved Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott. While gorgeous and free to look at from the outside, you can also tour the inside for a small fee.
Rosslyn Chapel
https://www.rosslynchapel.com/Originally built in the 1400s, this gorgeous building is still functional as a church every week for the local parish. The site contains a small museum, cafe, Chapel, and a short walk around some ruins. If you are interested in the Mediaeval period, pagan and/or templar symbols, architecture, and Scottish History, this is a lovely place to visit off the beaten path. Although it is outside of Edinburgh proper, it is easily accessible by a short bus ride.
Above £30 - Advanced Booking Required or Highly Recommended
The Scotch Whisky Experience
https://www.scotchwhiskyexperience.co.uk/Whether you love it or hate it, whisky is a celebrated part of Scottish culture that deserves investigating! The Scotch Whisky Experience is an extremely popular tour that caters to both the whisky connoisseur and the whisky novice. You will learn how ‘the water of life’ is made, its rich history, and more about the different complexities of flavour and how they can be achieved by distillers. There are a wide variety of ‘levels’ of tour for a wide variety of prices, but only one is under £30. Advanced booking at least three months out is required.
FAQ
Q: What is there to eat at the venue?
A: Food and drink will be provided the night of the wedding party (10th). There will also be a pasta bar on the 8th before the Board Game Night. See the schedule for more details.
Outside of this, the Croft and Maddie and Dan will provide some staples like pasta, pasta sauce, cereals, milk, tea and coffee. We will also provide some fresh fruit, canned soups, and some frozen bits as well. We ask that guests supplement this food with items from the Comrie Croft Farm Shop (see pics below). They have a good selection of excellent produce grown on-site, locally-made bread, canned goods, frozen locally-made meals, snacks, and fancy drinks and juices. There is also coffee to go. Please be mindful of sharing the kitchen space. Consider making a cooking buddy or two to share equipment when making meals!
Once what we provide is gone we will not be able to go to the shops and get more, so if you are really worried about food you could consider ordering takeaway or nipping out for a nice walk to Comrie for lunch. Since the Croft is entirely self-catered, you can also bring your own food. Please label private items so others know not to take them.
Q: Will this food be GF/vegan?
A: We are aware that many of our loved ones have dietary restrictions. We are always mindful of these needs and do our best to accommodate them when buying pre-made items like soups, snacks, and pastas. Items that are GF/vegan will be labeled as such and we request that people that do not have these restrictions don’t use these items, even if non-GF/vegan items have run out.
Q: What is the kitchen situation?
A:
Q: Will there be alcohol at the venue?
A: No, other than the night of the 10th when of course there will be alcohol. If you want to drink on other nights, please BYOB.
Q: What is the dress code for the wedding?
A: Formal, but make sure you can dance because it is a ceilidh!
Q: What is a ceilidh?
A: A ceilidh (pronounced KAY-lee) is traditional Scottish partner dancing. If you have ever been barn or country dancing, it is very similar and you may even recognise some of the moves. There will be a “caller” who teaches the dance beforehand so complete novices can easily participate. Probably none of us will know the dances by heart, so if you are unfamiliar don’t worry! All you need to enjoy a ceilidh is a positive attitude and a sense of fun.
Q: What is the parking situation?
A: We ask that people who are driving carpool as much as possible. The Croft’s farm shop, bike shop, and hiking/biking trails will be open to the public the entire time we are at the Croft, so we need to be respectful and mindful that we aren’t unnecessarily flooding their lot.
Q: I’m an American and I am planning to drive. How hard can it be?
A: Maddie had been driving for over a decade in America and failed her UK driving test three times before she finally caved and got a UK teacher. Some things to keep in mind:
If you cannot drive a stickshift (manual transmission) car, you need to book well in advance and specify with the car hire service that you cannot drive a manual transmission vehicle. In the UK, manuals are the default and it is not guaranteed that you will get a car you can drive if they have run out of automatic vehicles.
Please do not try to learn how to drive a stick during our wedding, Maddie will die of anxiety.
Pop quiz, hotshot!
- Do you know if the UK uses MPH on their signs or KMPH?
- Do you know what the “national speed limit” is and what it is for a dual carriageway vs a split carriageway?
- Do you know what the speed limit is if you are in town and the street has streetlamps?

Q: What is the smoking situation?
A: All accommodation is smoke-free. There are designated spaces for smoking tobacco products. Obviously, illegal substances are illegal and Maddie and Dan will take the fall if you use them on site - it’s in our rental contract!
Q: Is there Wi-Fi at the Croft?
A: Yes. Details on how to join are posted around the Croft.
Q: What is there to do on site?
A: One of the main reasons we chose Comrie Croft as our venue is because there is so much to do! There are over 200 acres of hiking and biking trails to explore. Bikes can be rented ahead of time via their website (https://www.comriecroftbikes.co.uk/pages/bike-rental) or upon arrival. Explore the beauty of this special place and find magical spots like the roaring waterfalls or the rope swing.
Also available is the Nowhere Sauna: a Finnish-style sauna which can hold 8 patrons at a time. Prebooking is not mandatory but recommended since we have a large party. Book on their website and find out what you should bring along here: https://nowheresauna.com/
The charming village of Comrie is just a short walk away via one of the footpaths. It has several food options, from chippies to local bakeries to sit-in dining, and has lovely parks and views.
All this combined with the events we are having at the Croft each evening means you’ll likely be leaving wishing we had a longer stay!
Q: What is the on-site farm shop like?
A: The shop has assorted fruit, vegetables, eggs, dairy, snacks, tea, coffee, etc!
